Dr Law Hui Nee Annie (刘慧妮医生)

Dr Annie Law is a Senior Consultant Rheumatologist and Medical Director at Asia Arthritis & Rheumatology Centre with a subspeciality interest in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

Clinical Practice and Expertise

Dr Annie Law has devoted the last 12 years of her life to the Department of Rheumatology and Immunology at SGH, tirelessly caring for her patients. As a Senior Consultant, her role goes beyond just caring for bread-and-butter rheumatological disorders. It extends into her special interest in the lupus population, where she is intrinsically involved in and serves as the lead for the subspecialty SLE clinics. This clinic, which runs twice monthly and focuses on complex lupus patients, is one of its kind in Singapore.

Dr Law exemplifies herself as a caring and compassionate physician who always practises patient-oriented care. Her patient always comes first and in recognition of her outstanding service to her patients, she has been duly recognised by SGH with the following awards: Service with a Heart Award (2023), Heart of Gold Award (2022), Service with a Heart Award (2022), Singapore Health Quality Service Star Award (2022), Singapore Health Quality Service Silver Star Award (2018), Singapore Health Quality Service Star Award (2017), Service with a heart Award (2016), Singapore Health Service Gold Award (2016) and Singapore Health Quality Service Silver Award (2013).

Education and Training

Dr Annie Law obtained her Bachelor of Medicine, Surgery and Obstetrics and Gynaecology (MB BCh BAO) from the National University of Ireland (Galway) in 2006. She was awarded Membership of Royal College of Physicians, United Kingdom and Master of Medicine, Singapore in 2011. After which, she pursued advanced specialist training in Rheumatology at Singapore General Hospital. She received her specialist Rheumatology and Immunology accreditation in 2015 from Singapore’s Ministry of Health and is registered under the Singapore Medical Council.

She was awarded the Singhealth Health Manpower Development Program Fellowships (HMDP) in “Management of Organ Specific Flares in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus with Appropriate Treat-to-Target Goals” in 2017.  She did her fellowship at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia and was under the tutelage of Prof Eric Morand. Upon her return, she leverages on her experience and insights to treat complex lupus patients.

Academics and Research

Dr Annie Law has been actively involved in the research of SLE and was instrumental in setting up a prospective lupus database in Singapore General Hospital since 2019, which serves as a platform to better understand patients with lupus and aims to improve outcomes through advancing care and treatment of lupus patients.

She is actively involved in several pharmaceutical-initiated clinical trials as a principal investigator and co-investigator. She has also received multiple research grants as a fellow co-investigator with local collaborators, in studying potential biomarkers to detect flares in lupus, immune dysregulation in lupus and potential new therapy for lupus. Most notably, she is part of the research team which discovered potential protein therapy (CXCL-5) in the treatment of lupus. She aided in the collection of human samples to identify this protein which validates the findings. This finding was published in one of the top peer-reviewed rheumatology journals, Arthritis and Rheumatology in Oct 2022 and was highlighted as an important study in Nature Reviews Rheumatology.  She has also published in several peer-reviewed journals primarily on SLE with a team of esteemed researchers.

Furthermore, she is also part of the Asia Pacific Lupus Collaborations group, where rheumatologists with a special interest in lupus and researchers work together to improve the quality of care in lupus patients via research initiatives. Some of these works include the LLDAS validation study, treat to target SLE study and SLE outcomes study.

Medical Teaching

Dr Annie Law enjoys teaching and has served as a caring and dedicated mentor to many medical students, junior and senior residents. She is a core faculty member of the SingHealth Rheumatology postgraduate senior residency programme, Clinical Assistant Professor at Duke-NUS Medical School, Senior Clinical Lecturer at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, and a Clinical Teacher at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine.

Throughout her years in SGH, Dr Law has spent countless hours educating students, residents and peers alike as evident by her numerous lectures at local programmes, seminars and conferences. She has held multiple positions ranging from clinical tutor to CME and MRCP PACES organiser. Her deep devotion to teaching is apparent during her stint in SGH. She was recognised and awarded as an outstanding faculty in the annual Residency in Singhealth Excels (RiSE) in 2019.

Rheumatology Society Involvement

Dr Annie Law has made significant contributions to the professional organisation for rheumatology in Singapore, advancing the knowledge and practice of rheumatology locally. She was a Committee Member and Co-opted member of the Singapore Society of Rheumatology (SSR) and held other key positions namely Organising Committee Member for SSR. She is now part of the Scientific organising committee for the upcoming Asia Pacific League of Associations for Rheumatology (APLAR) 2024.

This committee serves as a platform for rheumatologists to collaborate and share learnings for the betterment of its patients. Her constant involvement is a testimony of her commitment and devotion to the rheumatology society and its goals.

Activities and Interests

In her free time, Dr Law enjoys outdoor activities such as cycling, hiking and travelling.
